Infographics are sexy. They are becoming more and more popular, especially as our attention spans continue to shrink.
But you might need to think about them differently if you want to attract the largest possible audience to your business.
A few months ago I interviewed Danny Ashton on Life Science Marketing Radio. Danny is the Founder and CEO of NeoMam studios, a design firm specializing exclusively in creating infographics. What I learned surprised me.
I had previously thought that infographics were primarily shared person to person. It turns out that the most effective way to get your information out is to have your infographic picked up by a trade publication.
In detail, Danny told me 4 things you need for a successful infographic that will attract attention from your ideal customers.
- Be very specific about your target audience (the end consumer) and their pain. This doesn’t mean talking about your solution either. You can gain awareness simply by presenting relevant information about a topic that matters a lot to them. You can read the specific example in the transcript of our conversation.
- Research the problem to new depths. When you find something even you didn’t already know that would help your customer, you’re on the right track.
- Think about trade publications that serve your audience. They are always looking for information that will be valuable to their readers. Your infographic must serve them as well.
- Make sure there is a narrative to your infographic – a beginning, a middle and an end. It needs to tell a story. What would people go to the trouble of printing out and posting on the wall?
Infographics done well can generate huge awareness for your company. Separate yourself from the crowd by doing more than throwing a bucket of facts on a canvas.
