Why You Should Consider Reverse Mentoring Chris Conner

What are we talking about? Reverse mentoring is the case where more senior individuals are learning from younger co-workers who likely have completely different ways of thinking about how to solve problems.

  • Traditional — Typically mentoring involves someone with a lot of experience helping a younger employee see the possibilities on a career path.

  • Reverse — While not as experienced, younger employees may open our eyes to things we hadn’t thought of and may not be intimidated by things they didn’t know were supposed to be difficult.

More than technology: Junior employees may help us in a lot of areas.

  • Cultural norms — they can open our eyes to the evolving norms around race and inclusiveness.

  • Expanded talent pool — Susan discovered the possibilities of how junior employees or interns can contribute in an organization that typically requires more senior people.

How it happened: The NemetzGroup brought on an intern for knowledge management but then asked her if she could also make an app for a client offsite during the pandemic. Amy jumped in without hesitation and the app was a success. Her approach was what stood out.

Bonus topic- “Momtoring” — Susan described what she and her friends learned while their kids were working from home during the pandemic.
